Canada boasts one of the most stable economies in the world, low corporate taxes, and unparalleled access to the North American market. For entrepreneurs, investors, and self-employed professionals, Canada offers several specialized immigration pathways designed to attract foreign capital and business expertise.

Federal Start-up Visa Program (SUV)

The Start-up Visa program is one of Canada's most innovative immigration pathways. Unlike traditional investor programs, the SUV does not require you to invest your own personal net worth into the business. Instead, you must pitch your innovative business idea to a Canadian designated organization and secure a Letter of Support.

• Designated Organizations: You must secure a minimum investment of $200,000 from a designated venture capital fund, $75,000 from an angel investor group, OR be accepted into a designated business incubator program.
• Language Requirements: You must prove language proficiency of CLB 5 in English or French.
• Ownership: Up to 5 people can apply as owners of a single business under this program.

Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) Entrepreneur Streams

Almost every Canadian province operates its own Entrepreneur stream under the Provincial Nominee Program. These streams require you to establish or purchase a business in a specific province.

Generally, these streams operate on an Expression of Interest (EOI) scoring system. You will be evaluated based on your personal net worth, your proposed investment amount, your business management experience, and the location of your business (rural areas often score higher). If nominated, you typically first arrive in Canada on a Work Permit to establish the business, and you are nominated for PR only after the business has successfully operated for 1-2 years.

Self-Employed Persons Program

This federal program is specifically tailored for individuals who have world-class experience in cultural activities or athletics. You must demonstrate that you have the experience and ability to be self-employed in Canada and make a significant contribution to Canada's cultural or athletic life.

Eligible occupations include artists, musicians, filmmakers, journalists, athletes, and coaches. You must have at least two years of relevant experience within the five years before you apply.

Intra-Company Transferees (ICT)

While technically a temporary work permit rather than a direct PR program, the ICT pathway is highly utilized by business owners. If you own an established business outside of Canada, you can expand your operations by opening a Canadian branch, subsidiary, or affiliate. You can then transfer yourself to Canada as an executive or senior manager. The experience gained in Canada can eventually be used to apply for permanent residency.
