Work Permit For Graduates
Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Consultant in Mississauga
What is a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)?
The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is an open work permit available to international students who have graduated from an eligible Canadian Designated Learning Institution (DLI). A PGWP allows you to work full-time for any Canadian employer in any location or industry without needing a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).
Gaining skilled Canadian work experience through a PGWP is the single most effective way to boost your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score and transition to Permanent Residency through Express Entry (Canadian Experience Class) or an Ontario PNP.
PGWP Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for a PGWP, you must meet strict IRCC criteria:
- Have completed an academic, vocational, or professional training program at an eligible DLI lasting at least 8 months.
- Have maintained full-time student status in Canada during every academic session of your program.
- Have received a final transcript and official letter confirming you have completed your program requirements.
- Apply within 180 days of receiving your final marks.

How Long is a PGWP Granted For?
The duration of your PGWP depends directly on the official length of your study program:
- Under 8 months: Not eligible for a PGWP.
- 8 months to under 2 years: Granted for the exact duration of your study program.
- 2 years or longer: Granted for a full 3 years.
- Master's Degree Programs: Under recent IRCC policy updates, graduates of master's degree programs lasting at least 8 months are eligible for a 3-year PGWP.
Transitioning from PGWP to Permanent Residency
Once you acquire 12 months of full-time skilled work experience in Canada (NOC 2021 TEER categories 0, 1, 2, or 3), you become eligible for the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) under Express Entry. Our Mississauga RCIC team helps you track your CRS points and prepare your PR profile well in advance.
Frequently Asked Questions about PGWP
The validity of a PGWP depends on the duration of your study program in Canada. Programs between 8 months and 2 years yield a PGWP equal to the length of the program. Programs of 2 years or longer (or master's degrees) can yield a 3-year PGWP.
You have up to 180 days after receiving your official final marks or completion letter from your Designated Learning Institution (DLI) to apply for your PGWP. You must maintain valid status in Canada during this period.
Yes! If you apply for your PGWP before your study permit expires and you met all conditions of working off-campus during your studies, you can work full-time while waiting for IRCC's decision under maintained status.
Generally, a PGWP is a once-in-a-lifetime permit and cannot be extended. However, IRCC occasionally releases public policies allowing extensions, or you can transition to an LMIA-supported work permit or Provincial Nominee Program.
