Maintaining Your Permanent Resident Status

Your Permanent Resident (PR) card is the official proof of your status in Canada. You need a valid PR card to return to Canada by commercial vehicle, such as an airplane, boat, train, or bus. While your PR status does not expire when your card expires, failing to renew your card can cause significant disruptions to your international travel plans.

Many permanent residents use the PR card renewal process as a stepping stone toward applying for Canadian Citizenship, as both applications require meticulous tracking of your physical presence in Canada.

The Residency Obligation (730 Days)

To keep your permanent resident status and successfully renew your PR card, you must meet the residency obligation. This means you must have been physically present in Canada for at least 730 days (2 years) within the five years immediately preceding your application.

These 730 days do not need to be continuous. Furthermore, there are exceptions where time spent outside of Canada can count toward your 730 days, including:

• Accompanying a Canadian Citizen: You were traveling with your spouse or common-law partner who is a Canadian citizen, or you are a dependent child traveling with a Canadian citizen parent.
• Employment Outside Canada: You were employed on a full-time basis by a Canadian business or the public service of Canada or a province.
• Accompanying a Permanent Resident: You were traveling with your spouse, common-law partner, or parent who is a permanent resident and is employed on a full-time basis by a Canadian business or the public service of Canada.

The Application Process

To renew your PR card, you must submit an application that includes evidence of your physical presence in Canada. This involves detailing your travel history outside of Canada for the past five years. Mistakes or discrepancies in your travel dates can trigger an investigation or a Residency Questionnaire (RQ), severely delaying your application.

• You must provide primary identity documents, such as a copy of your valid passport.
• You must provide clear photos that meet IRCC's strict permanent resident photograph specifications.
• The processing fee for a PR card renewal is currently $50 CAD.

What if you lose your PR Card outside Canada?

If you are currently outside Canada and your PR card is expired, lost, stolen, or destroyed, you cannot use it to board a commercial flight back to Canada. Instead, you must apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) from a Visa Application Centre (VAC) abroad. A PRTD is usually valid for a single entry and allows you to return to Canada, where you can then apply for a replacement PR card.
